Hi everyone, I’m currently working in a childcare setting where I often have to plan activities for a mixed-age group (ages 2–5). I find it challenging to design programs that are engaging and developmentally appropriate for both younger and older children at the same time.

One approach I’ve found effective is designing activities with “layered challenges” so children can participate at their own developmental level. Here are a few examples:
Storytelling with Props
- Younger children (2–3): Hold and explore puppets or props while listening.
- Older children (4–5): Retell parts of the story, add dialogue, or invent new endings.
Music & Movement
- Younger: Simple clapping, marching, or dancing to rhythm.
- Older: Lead the group in patterns, create their own dance sequences, or suggest variations.
Art with Loose Parts
- Younger: Explore textures, colours, and basic shapes.
- Older: Build collages, create representational art, or explain their design choices.
Nature Play
- Younger: Collect leaves, rocks, or sticks.
- Older: Sort by size/color, create patterns, or build small structures.
Always frame the activity with a shared group goal (e.g., “Let’s make a story together” or “Let’s build a garden scene”), but allow children to contribute at their own level. This keeps the group cohesive while honoring individual abilities.
