Scenarios: James & Tom and Lucy - Risk Of Harm
Task 2 questions relating to both scenarios
The question that i am struggling with is
What is your duty of care? Can you see any conflicts with abiding with the Code Of Ethics and fulfilling your duty of care?
The duty of care is defined as the legal duty to take reasonable care that other are not harmed. Educators have the responsibility to
ensure a child's safety and well being when attending child care and act as a mandatory reporter when required.
I am just stuck on the part 2 of the question and i don't have any ideas to answer the question
THANKS!!!

Within the attachment it is providing you with the links to the information you need to answer for TASK 2. So, you just need to go through the links mentioned, re-read the scenarios and answer the questions. The scenarios are based on risk of harm/child protection so any information from the links that mention anything on keeping children safe etc.
If you want more help, please attempt the questions and provide your responses so I can check them and guide you through the questions...
cheers,
,

Re: Scenarios: James & Tom and Lucy - Risk Of Harm
I was hoping someone could give me a hand with this question... It's to do with Risk of harm. Just not sure how to answer it...
I have tried so many times to google and google and even ask my tutor what sort of things she wants me to write but, she doesn't help at all. Any help would be appreciated! thankyou.
Suggest some strategies that could be put in place by the educator to reduce the risk of harm.
I'll put the scenario down the bottom here...
ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED! THANKS XX
Billy (2.9) has been attending your program two days per week for the last three months. Billy lives with his mother (Jenny) and her partner Lance, the father of two-month-old Mia. The family lives in a rented two-bedroom unit on the third floor of a block of flats. The flats are one of a series of dwellings situated near a busy road. There are no fenced play areas for children and there is limited access to public transport. Jenny, who has been unwell since the birth of Mia, spends most of her time at home trying to rest. Mia has not settled into a routine and is difficult to feed. Lance is currently unemployed but does work as a labourer when work is available.
Billy is an extremely active child, who tends to be loud and impulsive. He has poor language skills and his speech is difficult to understand. When Billy is not able to make himself understood he becomes physically aggressive. He has poor social skills and does not relate well to the other children, who often refer to Billy as being “naughty”.
Recently you have noticed that Billy has become sullen and withdrawn. He is easily upset and cannot tolerate other children playing near him. Billy is thin and has sallow skin. He often has a runny nose. Yesterday you noticed that Billy had three elongated bruises on his upper back. Two of bruises were red/purple in colour and the third was yellowish brown. You asked Lance, who usually collects Billy, about the bruises and he became annoyed and said that Billy was “Always crashing into things”. He then grabbed Billy by the arm and dragged him out the door without saying good-bye.

I am also stuck on part 2 of this question. "Can you see any conflicts with abiding with the code of ethics and fulfilling your duty of care?"
Unfortunately the links provided do not work and "can not be found" which is making it very difficult for me to be able to find a reasonable answer.
I literally have no answer and can't find anything....

I am just a learner so forgive me if my reply is misguided.
I am noting first it should be obvious to us that reporting suspected abuse has priority over confidentiality and privacy legislation.
In relation to conflict of interest , does the context of the question refer to the risk that if we report suspected abuse , there may be a risk of that parent removing the child from our center in retribution , so causing us to lose contact with the child and lose the ability to monitor the childs condition ?
losing income from one child is not an issue , the priority must be on protecting the child , as we might get only one opportunity to protect a child if abuse is occurring .
What DOC's or other authorities do with the information is a whole new topic in itself , but our obligations are to adhere to the legislation without fear of retribution ?
Am i right or am i not understanding this correctly ?
Re: Scenarios: James & Tom and Lucy - Risk Of Harm
Could the conflict of interest from the scenario be:
- Jenny is unwell since the birth of Mia
- Lance is currently unemployed but does work as a labourer when work is available.
- Billy has poor language skills and his speech is difficult to understand. When Billy is not able to make himself understood he becomes physically aggressive. He has poor social skills and does not relate well to the other children, who often refer to Billy as being “naughty”.
- Lance, who usually collects Billy, about the bruises and he became annoyed and said that Billy was “Always crashing into things” which relates to Billy is an extremely active child, who tends to be loud and impulsive.
