Scenario: Timothy - Third Week In Care

Post by Daye » Wed Nov 18, 2015 3:36 pm

Timothy is 9 months old and this is his third week in care.He is an only child and his mother Anna is an Aboriginal/ Torres Strait Islander. She has told you that he sleeps on his stomach in a pram at home or cosleeps with close family members. He is breastfed upon arrival at childcate and bottlefed with formula during the day and goes to sleep with bottle. He uses disposable nappies.Timothy attends three (3) days a week; he arrives at around 8:15am and is on his way home by 3.09pm

Timothy is due for a bottle but you do not have one prepared.Anna has left some spare formula ( in its original tin) and has given you a bottle that he used at his previous feed.

Questions:
L) What information would you tell Anna?

Answer:
I will inform Anna about Timothy's learning and development for the day. I will tell her details how Timothy spent the day by playing with other children, what taken his interest like for example playing with blocks and putting it together, whom among the kids he has develop friendship.I will inform her about how Timothy enjoy his bottle of milk, how much he consumed for the day and how frequent I did botgle fed Timothy.I will inform Anna what did I make to settle Timothy by playing a relaxing music.I will inform Anna the time I put Timothy to sleep and how long did he sleeps.I will also show Anna some pictures of Timothy while he is playing together with other children.I will inform her that Timothy is now enjoying fruits.I will also inform Anna how Timothy enjoy his time during nappy changing by holding up his nappy while Im cleaning him .I will inform her how many times I change Timothys nappy and what time.I will inform her about the strategies I used to settle Timothy on his pram and put him into his cot afterward to sleep.

M) How would this information be communicated?

Answer:
This information can be communicated by recording each and every activities of Timothy in the centre for a day. When the parents pick up Timothy this is the best time to inform parents about the recorded observation about their children.Showing pictures of Timothy's activity will also be helpful for parents to have an idea how Timothy spend his day.Documenting childrens experiences in ways that are intresting and easy for parents to understand. Also as much as possible the educator should make it a point that the information given are more on the positive side and avoid using words that may dissapoint parents.

N) List the information you feel should be recorded and shared between educators who are involved in Timothys care. Why is this impirtant?

Answer:
The rest time of each children so educators will understand individual childrens need for rest ( will children required the same amount of rest?) So educator can also know or think of strategies how to provide comforting rest environment, so educator can be familiarized who among children who wants to rest by lying on cushion,by staying on quiet room while educator reads some story.
- Knowledge aboht Timothy's different sleep and waking states should also be recorded so educator know wjat is the right time for Timothy to sleep
-Timothys states of sleeping and waking up, whether Timothy wakes up crying so educator can make it sure that when Timothy wakes up there will be educator that can easily attends to his needs.
-Timothy's sleeping cues or signs when he is about to sleep such as droopimg eyelids, head dropping, rubbimg eyes, putting head down, crying or becoming quiet or sucking thumbs.
- Timothy's sleeping behaviours and characteristics if he wakes up brieflt, several times or can go back to sleep quickly, or if once awaken if he cry, squirm, mutter or even talk while sleeping.
-If during sleeping Timothy don't want to be alone in a dark room by himself so educators can think of strategies by providing security toy or comforter to help Timothy to wind down.
-Timothy's rest time should also be shared,if Timothy needs a dummy or bottle before sleep, or a song to settle or a comforter to cuddle.
-Timpthy's waking up time routines should also be shared for example when Timothy wakes up he like to have a little time alone,or after waking up Timothy is all ready to jump up to play the minute his eyes open because some children may take up to a half hour to wake up properly so educator knows if Timothy should be given more time to adjust to being awake.
-the number of times Timothu changed his nappy should also be recorded and shared so educators could monitor because sometimes the change of pattern of numbet of times of changing nappies maybe associated with illness or stressed about some situation at home or at the centre so parents should be informed.

O) How will you support Timothy's wellbeing i transition from centre at home?

Answer:
At the end of the day before Timothy is about to pick up by his Mum prepare or provide a small individual experiences for Timothy like for example reading him a short story, or a relaxation memory game while waiting for his Mum to prepare him to go home. Remember to include individual farewell to Timothy including the words " looking forward to seeing you next time.
- Educator can create a predictable end of the day routine to help ease Timothy's transition from care to home for example by involving Timothy in simple picking up of toys to give him some cues that Mummy is about to come or by holding Timothy up and looking out the window and saying " Look at the windows for Mummy".
- the educator should avoid quick changes of activity but rather give Timothy some warning like for example telling Timothy " Timothy you have 8 minutes to play before you go home or say "Timothy let me help you to get your bag and packed before your Mum picks you up, or Let me help you to put your shoe on.
