Scenario: Timothy - Sleeping In A Pram

You have been asked to give support a new educator and give the following information regarding centre policy,procedures and current professional practice in regards to Timothy.

Timothy is 9months old and this is his third week in care.He is an only child and his mother Anna is an Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander.She has told youthathe sleeps on hiz stomach in a pram at home or co-sleeps with close family members.He is breast fed upon arrival at child care and bottle fed with formula during the day and goes to sleep with his bottle.He uses disposable nappies.Timothy attends three (3) days a week;he arrives at around 8:15 am and on his way home by 3.00pm.
Timothy is due for a bottle but you do not have one prepared.Anna has left some spare formula (in its original tin) and has given you a bottle that he used at his previous feed.

* Timothy falls asleep during' feeding' as you place him in a cot he wakes and scream.

Questions:
g) how would you accommodate the family preference that Timothy sleeps in pram?

Answer:
I don't think I will allow Timothy to sleep in pram, under Quality Area 2, element 2.1.2 each child's comfort is provided for and there are appropriate opportunities to meet each childs need for sleep,rest and relaxation although its the family preference under the policy childrem should not be allow to sleep in pram.probably what I will do is just put Timothy to the pram just to stop him crying, and while in the pram I will supervise him,after he is settled again I will put him back to the cot.

h)What safe sleeping practices would you need to address to ensure that Timothy's emotional well being is being supported?

Answer:
- I will sleep Timothy on the back not on his tummy or side on a firm,flat surface.for according to SIDS " " Remember "Back to sleep, tummy to play, set up to watch the world".
- Sleep Timothy with face and heads needs to stay uncovered during sleep as this reduces the risk of SUD.
- Put Timothy's feet at the bottom of the cot so that Timothy can't sleep down under the bedding.( do not use blanket but instead use a safety baby sleeping bag one with fittef neck and arm holes and no hood.
- Ensure that Timothy has no head coverings such as bonnets,beanies,hats or hooded clothing.
- When Timothy is placed to sleep check that the feet are positioned at the bottom of the cot( bedding is tucked in secure and is not loose, head covering are removed, ensure there are no doonas,loose beddinh or fabric,pillows,bumpers or soft toys in cot.
- provide a sleeping environment by having a safe cot that meets the Australian Standard for cots ( AS/NZS 2172) safe mattress which means right size,firm,flat and clean, safe bedding, a pillow, cushion or beanbag is not a safe mattress so don't add additional padding under or over mattress.
- Ensure that there are no pillows,doonas,loose bedding or fabric or soft toys in the cot.
- sleep Timothy in a safe cot and never leave Timothy unattended.

****Timothy's sleeping environment should be free from hazard.Ensure that the beds/mattress are cleab and in good repair.The bed or cot should be arranged properly for easy access for Timothy abd carer.Create a relaxing atmosphere for Timothy by playing a soft music,dimming of lights and ensured that Timothy wears a comfortable clothing.The sleeping environment should be tranquil and calm.The carer can also sit near Timothy and stroke Timothys back or head provided Timothy wanted to.Ensure that the room temperature is appropriate for Timothy's safe sleeping,lighter clothing is preperable and remove shoes,jumpers,jackets abd bulky clothing.


I) What service policies and procedures would need to be followed?

Answer:
- Never leave baby unattended on bed.
- beanbags,couches,pillows and cushionsare not safe for babies.
- keep cot away from hanging cords such as blinds,curtains, electrical appliances or decorative mobiles.
-keep heaters or electrical appliances away from cots.
- never use electric blankets,hot water bottles for babies.
- ensure that the cot and sleep rooms must have operational baby monitors at all times.
- observe children to 10-q5 minute interval while they slerp in the room.Educators must go to the rooms and physicalky see the babies breathing,the educators will the record this.
-ensure that cot mattress are clean,firm and the corre t size for cot frame.
- make up cots to comply with SIDS safe sleeping guideliness.
- sleeping bags for babies have fitted neck and armholes so the childs face should not be covered.
- securely lock cots into place to ensure hildren's safety.
- turn off wall mounted heaters before children use the room for sleeping.
- cot's room will be air condirioned and maintained an appropriate temperature.
- be aware of manual handling when lifting babies in and out of cots.


Pls check,im not sure about my answer with pram,i dont know if the centre's allows children to sleep in pram.Thanks

Yes, your response is good!

About the prams, children should not be put to sleep in them, however as you mentioned you can settle Timothy and move him into his bed once he has settled...
