Part C | Moving beyond racism and discrimination
An understanding of the nature of racism and discrimination is essential in order to recognise and challenge this behaviour appropriately.
Racial discrimination is where a person/group believe they are superior (better than) another particular person/group/culture. Beliefs and values underpin behaviours. Racially discriminatory behaviours can exploit, vilify, abuse or exclude a person/s or particular group.
Persons or groups of people belonging to a minority group within the population are most at risk of racism and discrimination.
1. Provide one example of what racially discriminatory behaviour, demonstrated by children, could look like in an education and care service. (Minimum 50 words)
2. Provide one example of how you (as an Educator) can promote a culturally respectful (culturally safe) environment for children attending your service?(Minimum 30 words)
3. Provide one example of what racial discrimination could look like in an Education and Care service from the perspective of an employees (Minimum 50 words)
4. Provide one example of how you (as an Educator) can promote a culturally respectful (culturally safe) environment for all employees working at the early childhood education and care service. (Minimum 30 words)
I have not started on these yet as I am trying to find websites with information, can anyone point me in the right direction please?

1. One example of what children demonstrating racially discriminatory behaviour could look like in an education and care service would be, children selecting an individual peer and teasing or excluding them from an activity that they might be doing or an area they are playing in based on their colour or race.
2. One example of how I (as an Educator) can promote a culturally respectful (culturally safe) environment for children attending my service would be to role model a respectful and accepting approach to all children and treating everyone equally.
3. One example of what racial discrimination could look like in an Education and Care service from the perspective of an employee would be staff refusing to work with other staff members based on the colour of their skin or race. For example “I don’t want to work with an Australia, they don’t know anything about children”.
4. One example of how I (as an Educator) can promote a culturally respectful (culturally safe) environment for all employees working at the early childhood education and care service would be, to treat everyone equally and with respect. Finding out about different cultures and using that knowledge to help everyone feel at home and part of the team.
