Assessment Task 21 - promoting cultural safety
a) suggest three strategies you can implement in your workplace to ensure you are providing a culturally safe environment for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander children and families.
-story telling - elders, parents & grandparents tell the children dreamtime stories
-Music - Aboriginal music playing, didgeridoo playing
-cooking - aboriginal people hunted and gathered food from the land & could make damper in the Education setting together.
b) suggest three ways you can involve aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander children and families in the planning and delivery of the curriculum?
- include Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander music/arts/stories in the curriculum, an elder could come in regularly and assist
- parents/children can go to meetings/talk with Educators regarding their culture and beliefs and bring ideas to the centre
- take the 'class' for excursions to any Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander activities in the local community.
c) Suggest three ways you can ensure you are using culturally safe communication techniques when consulting and collaborating with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander children and families.
-being patient and building positive relationships with child/ren and their families
-make sure you are communicating with the correct person (correct kin ship/clan rules which often need to have been researched prior to meeting)
-listening to non-verbal messages such as body cues, gestures or postures to interpret the meaning of communication
