Your Assignment Module Number and Heading: HLTHIR403C work effectively with culturally diverse clients and co-workers
Your Assignment Type: Case Scenario
Currently Working in Childcare? Yes
Your knowledge: Basic Knowledge
Your Question?
"Tobias has recently enrolled in your centre. He is four years old and his parents are both professionals. Mandarin is the language spoken at home. You are aware that Tobias seems to be very tired towards the end of the week and lacks focus. You ask to speak with Tobias's parents who arrive with limited English language. After discussing how Tobias is progressing you observe the parents talking to Tobias in Mandarin. You attempt to speak with them in English and recognise that some of your comments may not be interpreted as you intend them. Finally after 30 minutes Tobias tells you that he attends another service 5 days a week after he finishes at your centre. You ask him what time he gets home and he states that he finishes his other service at 7:00pm and goes to his grandmothers home. He says that his parents pick him up at 9:00pm each night"
This scenario is a tricky one with the questions, I am not too sure on how to answer these questions...
1. What are some of the issues you need to think about?
2. How can you support Tobias at the centre?
3. How can you discuss and educate the parents with respect to their cultural differences about adequate sleep and how this may be affecting Tobias?
4. How will you approach the issue of Tobias attending another service (which you realise is a school preparation service)
What is your answer so far or What have you done so far as an attempt to solve this question?
A1. issues I believe is that he is not receiving enough sleep to function through the day properly. I feel as though I need some more within this question....
A2. supporting Tobias by getting him to have a sleep at the centre?

Re: Cert 3, Scenario 5
Hopefully these will give you a few ideas to get you started:
1. You can also include:
- Tobis parents work late into the evening
- Tobias spends the day at 2 centres
- Gets home late
2. Give him some time to work on activities, provide him with restful opportunities after lunch
3. Provide them with translated information on sleep for children. Suggest he can stay at his grandmas during the week so he doesn't get home late.
4. Provide information on the school readiness activities you are doing at the service and how you support and prepare children going to school the following year.
Since the family only has limited English, you can ask a member of staff to translate or another parent who speak the same language. If not, you may need to contact an interpretation service to assist you in communicating with this family.
Hope this helps,
,
