Hello,
I have started children's services this year.
And if anyone could please help me with this scenario

Jack has now returned to the service after a few days away sick. His dad has arrived with antibiotics for him to take at lunch time. He says he is in a hurry and 5ml should be enough for him to have.

Before jacks father leaves the service, what should you do to ensure you are following the regulations?

Hi Cupcakes,

The father has to fill in a medication form and sign it authorizing he is given permission to you to administer the medication. Check the policies and procedures manual at your centre for more info...

I am just finishing my cert III so someone more experienced may be able to confirm this but i was under the impression that you can just have his word that 5ml 'should' be enough and must follow what the doctor has written on there. If its something different to what is on the bottle then the doctor should write this in a letter.

No, the parents word isn't enough assurance and you need to verify the details of the medication with the parent by filling out a medication form. On the medication form it needs to be signed by the parent to confirm all the details, such as: dosage, prescription, name on bottle etc. Only when the medication form is filled out and signed by a parent, then we can administer the medication to the child.
