Re: Cultural Influences and Changing Cultural Practices
Yes. I have.
1. Influence of population growth: Today, Australia’s total population increase is of one person in every 1 minute and 19 seconds. Out of Australia’s 23.2 million people, 2.4% are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The percentage of youth is very high compared to the whole population of Australia.
2. Dominance of English language in Australia: 11% of Aboriginal people mainly speaking an Aboriginal language at home in 2008. 75% of these can speak in english. Many Aboriginal children were forced to learn english in order to assimilate to western society. Abolition of White Australia policy in 1970 designed to support migrants of non-english speaking background. Today, English is considered as a bridging language across different cultures. Today the language spoken and used for teaching is "Standard Australian English". It is spoken by a dominant group in Australia.
