Sam 4 1/2 years old has decided to make a hat. He decides the first thing he needs to do is make a band to fit around his head. Sam found a long strip of cardboard "This will do"
EDUCATOR: How will you know what size to make it so it fits your head?
Sam: Well, I'II just go like this. Sam wraps the cardboard around his head, it needs to be this big. Sam then removes the cardboard from his head but now has no way of knowing the size he needs.
EDUCATOR: How about I use some string to measure your head and then you can make your cardboard the same length.
Sam: yeah! The educator and Sam use string to measure his head circumference. The educator holds the piece of string on the table and Sam uses a pencil to mark the length.
Educator: when we measure around something it's called the 'circumference'. Sam repeats the word 'circumference' and nods.
Educator: How are you going to join the cardboard?
Sam: I can use the stapler, cause it's strong.
Educator: Good idea. Do you need any help?
Sam: No, I can do it.
