Question:
Archie is almost four years old and has trouble weeing in the toilet. He often ends up weeing in his pants before he makes it to the toilet. You have been giving him gentle reminders to check in with his body and encouraging him to try and use the toilet frequently so as to avoid accidents.
Archie’s mother is extremely concerned about his accidents. She is distraught that he has so many accidents and has been very verbal about it, saying in front of him that she thinks there might be something wrong with him.
What do you do? Write out all communication you would have with Archie’s mother regarding this situation.
My answer:
I can tell Archies mother to Try to stay calm if toilet training seems to take longer than she expected. Stay positive about Archies’s achievements, because he’ll get there eventually. Too much tension or stress can lead to negative feelings and might result in Archie avoiding going to the toilet.
Any help would be awesome thank you

Yes, you could also maybe provide a toileting reward chart for Archie to use at home and at the centre. Every time Archie does a wee he gets a sticker on the chart. Could be incentive for him to use the toilet. Also, maybe you could read stories to Archie about going to the toilet. This may help provide comfort and support. Archie's mother should be reminded that there is nothing wrong with Archie and that he is fantastic boy who just needs to be reminded to go to the toilet. Any concerns she should have Archie, shouldn't have to hear as it probably makes him feel anxious and worried about having to use the toilet....
On a side not - the reward chart system really works. I was able to toilet train my 20 month old to use the potty using the reward chart and reading stories about going to the toilet. Within 2 days she was able to use the toilet for all her toileting needs!
Hope this helps,
