Hi Geoff,

Put your self in the room as such, this will provide you with different inspirational ideas.. whilst imagining yourself in the service look at the setting, look at the activities and how could you extend existing learning.. paintings, drawings, historical themes..

As an example: Role Play, what role play facilities are available and if they do not meet the needs for National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observance we need to introduce these.. create activities for the children to dress and practice the history around Aboriginal and Torres Islander History - take one element and let the children explain what they understand, design a plan a mini theatre or act out in a play.. singing rhymes and designing dance.. create a banner of flags celebrating the day and take these into the external setting.. have a poster competition.. children could doe this at home and increase awareness and learning outside of the setting..

Painting the time line of the history might be a big task - break the group into sub groups and each team can learn one element and then bring them all together for the whole story?

Could you encourage some from your local community to come into school and talk about an interesting facet..

Celebrating or marking one day could be a whole weeks experience leading up to your main event..

Could parents be invited in to take part in some joint activities..

Visiting Indigenous Australian websites for other ideas will help too..

Perhaps a trip to Cairns as the 2017 host city may be a bit too much to expect...

I am sorry for throwing so much out there I just got quite exited...
