An early childhood educator in Sydney has been charged with multiple offenses after Australian Federal Police (AFP) allegedly discovered more than 500,000 unique images of child abuse material on his electronic devices.
The man, whose identity is protected under a court suppression order, was arrested following a search warrant executed at his residence in June. According to police, the warrant led to the seizure of several electronic devices containing approximately 1.4 million files, including around 550,000 unique images suspected to be child abuse material.
The AFP formally charged the individual in July with seven counts of using a child under the age of 14 to produce child abuse material, three of which are classified as aggravated offenses. He also faces one count of possessing child abuse material via a data-use carriage service.
Detective Superintendent Luke Needham of the AFP stated that investigators are still reviewing the extensive digital evidence and working to identify potential victims. “The number of files does not provide any indication of the scale of the alleged offending,” Needham said, “but rather indicates the volume of work required by investigators from the AFP’s victim identification team”.
The accused had been employed in the childcare sector for over a decade and worked at multiple centers across Sydney. He was scheduled to appear before Parramatta Local Court on Friday.
The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities emphasizing their commitment to protecting children and thoroughly examining all evidence.
