Describe what pests and vermin can be defined as. (75-100 words)
Vermin are any variety of small animal or insect that are considered pests. The term vermin can be applied to any animal species which is regarded as pests or a nuisance with particular regard to any that carry diseases. The term is usually applied to disease-carrying pests such as rodents and insects but can also be applied to larger animals if they exist out of balance in their environment or if they are consuming resources. Farmers are generally the most likely to come across these larger vermin who can eat or damage crops. These larger animals are often introduced species such as foxes and can cause irreparable damage to the environment and also the native wildlife. Some examples of small vermin that we may come across in our homes that are considered pests are rodents, cockroaches, fleas, termites, lice, bed bugs, ants, and mosquitoes.
