CHCECE024 - Scenario: Children From Diverse Backgrounds

Post by dom97 » Tue Jan 31, 2017 1:56 pm

Hello just wondering how you would tackle this case study.

At Middlebark Kindergarten, there is one educator of Australian background and another of Chinese background. There are also a large number of children attending the service of Chinese descent. The learning environment shows a strong representation of the Chinese culture through photographs, artwork, displays and play experiences. The Chinese educator is very connected with her culture and enjoys sharing her experiences and knowledge with the children. She will often speak Chinese with the Chinese children, and is also teaching some basic Chinese words to the other children in the group. Both educators feel that they do a good job of teaching the children about cultural diversity as the Chinese culture is so immersed in their program.
Within the group there are also three children of Sudanese descent, two from Indian background and two from Greek background. There is also one child from a same sex household, three children from a single parent household and one child who lives with his grandparents.

a) Do you feel that the families and the community are respected in this kindergarten? Explain your answer.
b) Would you make any modifications to the learning environment and materials to ensure that families and the community are respected. If yes, explain the modifications you would make. If no, explain your reasoning.

Await yr reply

It feels like a strong representation of Chinese culture compared to others. The centre needs to cater for all cultures that are represented by the children/families within the centre.

Ok so if you received feedback from a parent, for example, what would you do with it? Would you make note of it on the program, add it to a parent input form, follow up with it with the appropriate educator... etc.

thank you for you reply.

I have answered the aforementioned question in this manner:
Specific feedback is acted upon by quality documentation in order to focus on aspects of learning. It prompts questions and promotes conversations among children and adults that depend and extends learning.
Documentation makes children’s and educators’ thinking visible. It allows children and educators to revisit it, reflect, uncover meaning and plan future directions
Observation is also another specific feedback acted upon. Educators are keen observers. They notice not only what children are doing, but also what and how they are playing and what they are saying during play.
This puts them in a strong position to develop a program based on their observations.
