Scenario: Lucy - Extreme Nappy Rash and Large Red Handprint

Post by MariaPorcaro » Tue Sep 13, 2016 10:11 pm

hello I would really love some help as im stuck answering a few of these questions....

Lucy is six months old and attends an education and care service Mon, Wed and Friday. Lucy’s mother is Aboriginal and a night packer at the local shops so dad drops Lucy off and mum picks her up. They live in a community where police often visit due to frequency of violence. It is Monday and Lucy’s father drops her off. Lucy has just started to sit up whilst aided with soft pillows around her. You attempt to sit Lucy down but she screams and puts her hands up for you. Lucy’s father tells you she has been like this all morning and he has had enough and needs to get to work and he leaves.
You decide to check Lucy’s nappy when you notice the nappy is soaked through; she has a nappy rash that has resulted in her bottom bleeding and a large red hand print at the top of her leg. Lucy is screaming as you attempt to place a clean nappy on her. You gently place nappy cream on her bottom as permission has been granted on the enrollment form and pick Lucy up to console her.

Following policy and procedure what is your immediate response?

All students to prepare a written report in relation to Lucy. ensure you write professionally and with no personal opinions or judgement. You may make up information such as the address.

Scenario 2 Lucy

Post by MariaPorcaro » Tue Sep 13, 2016 10:39 pm

D:- Will the parent be notified? Explain why or why not?

I would let the parent know when they came to pick Lucy up that we noticed she had nappy rash that made her bottom bleed and that we noticed a red mark on her leg and that she was quite upset, but will not inform them that it was reported to CARL as it would put the child at risk of further abuse and also of the parent taking her out of care, and then there will no longer be able to be like a refuge for Lucy.

Not sure if this is ok please help thankyou xx

In regards to reporting the child abuse the following may help:

Reporting Child Abuse In SA

D) Yes, I think you're on the right track! I wouldn't let them know that you filed a report however you can let them know that while changing Lucy's nappy you noticed she has extreme nappy rash which you applied the nappy rash cream on her throughout the day. You could also suggest to the parents to apply the cream on Lucy while changing her nappy at home.

E) Seems like you're on the right track with your response!
