Scenario: Jock - Living With Grandparents

Post by nemodori » Tue Mar 01, 2016 7:47 pm

It is three weeks since the incident with Pete. The boys are currently in the temporary care of the grandparents and the twins are in the care of the aunt. Ella and Pete (parents) have been given supervised visitation rights but neither of them has made any effort to see the children. The long-term placement of the children is dependent upon Ella and Pete undertaking drug and alcohol counselling and completion of a parenting program. To date Ella and Pete have not complied.
Jock and Tom continues to attend childcare. Then your present in clean clothing each day and are fed well. Jock has told the educator that he wants to stay with nanny and poppy forever and ever. Jocks nan reports that when she asks jock if you would like to talk to mummy to mummy on the phone, he says; "No not today nanny. I'm busy." Jocks nan also reports that Jock asks anxiously every day if he has to go home. Once reassured he appears happy. Jock never mentions Ella or Pete.
At morning tea, several staff members are talking about the family. Mitch, a younger educator comments that the children are so much better now that they are away from their druggie parents. He also says that the supervised visits are cruel and not fair to the children.
Kim, a supervisor, tells Mitch that his comments are unprofessional. Mitch responds, "Well, what I said might be unprofessional but it's what everyone is thinking, and besides, it's true!"

Question: Explain why Mitch's comments are unethical and inappropriate?

I think Mitch has no rights to comment anything that can be emotionally attached with the children. Besides, it's against the policy to be discussing about a child or its family problem; publicly. Things like this should be private and kept to yourself.

Should I write that down? Or any of you have a better idea?

Yes, you're on the right track with your response! All matters regarding families should be kept confidential and private and should not be discussed with others...

with the same scenario:

If you witnessed another Educator displaying unethical conduct similar to the above scenario, who would you report it to and why?

Director - because the Educator should understand that their behaviour is unethical and how they need to change it in order to make it ethically appropriate...
