Scenario: Toddler Distressed In The Laundry

Post by Daye » Wed Sep 30, 2015 12:22 pm

Scenario

You hear banging sounds coming from the laundry. When you open the door you find a distressed toddler behind the door sobbing 'Daddy, Daddy!'. There are no adults present and you do not know how long the child has been in the room.

A.) What is your duty of care here?
My duty of care is to immediately comfort the child.Reassure the child that I'm there for her and ask her what is the reasons why shes there crying.I will never leave the child and be looking for the factors why she is crying or feeling upset.I will find ways to cheer her up and provide some activities to help her settle again. If the reason for her crying is because she has separation anxiety with her dad leaving, I will reassure the child that her dad will be coming again soon. Also I will look up immediately if the child was hurt because I've heard banging sounds.

B.) Is the service meeting its legal requirements with regard to supervision?

I think the service fails to do its commitment with regards to supervision. As in the scenario it was stated in there that the staff did not know how long is the child have been there. It is the responsibility of the service to supervice the children at all times, supervising in a manner at all children are within their reach, all children are within their reach that they could hear them. They failed for their lack of supervision to this particular child could lead her being injured or being hurt.
