CHCECE013 - Scenario: Refugee children

I've been given this scenario, and I am expected to be able to do this without any classroom discussions or anything on brain development or biological influences. any pointers, websites or hints? much appreciated.

Perri is a four year old who has spent most of his young life in a refugee camp with his mother and four siblings. Until his arrival in Australia, Perri had never experienced the usual activities offered in a children’s service. He had not held a paint brush, crayon, pencil or scissors. He had no experience with books and having an adult read him a story. These are obvious signs that we may see in a child with this sort of background, but there are also deeper issues.

a) What are the impacts on early brain development and how this will affect his educational pathway through early childhood?

b) Pick two of the issues bellow and discuss how you can support these aspects of Perri’s life, and the information you would provide the family with.
• Poor diet
• Lack of play experiences
• Limited stimulation of brain development
• Lack of materials
• Inconsistent or non –existent emotional support or comfort
