Linking popular culture to bigSchool

Post by WarblerOn » Fri May 29, 2015 9:55 pm

I've been doing this project on going to big school and I've sort of narrowed it down to a literacy corner.
One of my reflections I said I'll encoruage the use of technology for finding other ways of accessing print/texts and forms of literacy. The next day I got out my laptop with the children and we explored Youtube and watched parts of 'The Lego Movie' after navigating the Youtube channel with the children.

(I need to link it to my previous activity/bigschool) in the previous activity children were writing print in their exercise books.

I reflected with this experience that; Literacy: in the early years literacy includes a range of modes of communication including music, movement, dance, story-telling, visual arts, media and drama, as well as talking, reading and writing.
Reading and writing are interrelated; children develop an understanding of both through exploring and experimenting with print within their environment. Technology plays a huge role in children’s learning of literacy.

Children are very involved with popular culture within their play and communication. The children have expressed in their play and communication; interest of ‘Lego’, ‘Frozen’ ‘Ninja Turtles’ and ‘Ninjago’. These popular cultures are one form of where literacy can be used.

I decided to use this opportunity to do some research with the children on YouTube about Lego Movie. I was looking through the trailer when they asked if we could watch the Lego Movie.

The reason the exploration of technology and YouTube was implemented today was to follow up on (child's name) experience where they talk about popular culture into their conversations and explore it with their writing in the exercise book.

Technology is another way of exploring literacy and following up the Literacy Corner in regards to Big School. When the children go to Big School they will be involved with technology, whether that’s through play, or learning or through their community engagement. In the ‘Lego Movie’ there is a lot of words and print and songs that the children imitate and repeat in their social interactions.

When I got my laptop out, the children immediately became interested. I used this collaborative activity with the children to look in the internet on building their interest through research with YouTube, to show them how to assist in using computer software and to allow them to make decisions and choices. By using the computer and watching a snippet of Frozen on the Ipad and watching half an hour of the Lego Movie they got to explore different mediums of where text/print and words can be used.

Does this make sense?
I feel like I'm repeatig myself
Basically I'm trying to say that popular culture and technology link in regards to literacy and children's learning within their bigschool environment.

I understand what you're saying and the example you have given on using the Lego Movie to explore literacy etc. It does make sense and you have shown how children engage in popular culture through technology.

Just wanted to share the following information on this topic:

Literacy and Popular Culture (check out the preview)

Hope this helps,
