Severe Food Allergies

Post by kirmar02 » Fri Oct 10, 2014 1:26 pm

Your Assignment Module Number and Heading: CHCECE002 - Ensure the health and safety of children
Your Assignment Type: Case Scenario
Currently Working in Childcare? No
Your knowledge: Beginner

Your Question?
Case study 6
Neve, a 3 year old child with severe allergies is enrolled to start care at the service at the commencement of the year. Neve is allergic to peanuts, tree nuts such as cashews, almonds and hazelnuts, and egg.
Neve’s parents, Sarah and Michael, have told you that Neve can experience difficulty breathing, swelling or tightness in the throat and a hoarse voice as a result of her allergies. Symptoms usually appear within minutes of exposure to the allergens.
Neve has been prescribed adrenaline in an auto-injector, commonly known as an EpiPen ® for administration in an emergency. She currently weighs under 20kg so uses the EpiPen ® Junior which administers a smaller dose of adrenaline.

Questions :
1. What information would you need to clarify with Neve’s parents when enrolling Neve into care?
2. What privacy considerations should be taken into account in relation to Neve’s health needs?

What is your answer so far or What have you done so far as an attempt to solve this question?
1.
Parents need to provide :
• A signed Medical Management Plan from their practitioner
• A care plan must be put into place
• An Emergency Action plan developed in consultation with themselves and their doctor
• An auto-injector (with valid use by date) for emergency use for their child
• I need to clarify Neve’s exact weight in order to be able to administer the correct dosage of adrenaline; this will have to be regularly monitored to ensure Neve has the correct EpiPen dosage available to her at all times.

2.
Maintaining confidentiality on individuals health needs is important to ensure their right to privacy. Parents of other children at the service with no allergies need to be aware of any existing food allergies at the centre and the policies and procedures that are put into place for the service, there is no need to provide any private information directly to them regarding the specific child. However it will be necessary to display ASCIA Plan and for the information contained within in the plan to be made available to both the staff and emergency medical personnel (if necessary), authorization must be obtained from Neve’s parents prior to doing this.

Yes, you're on the right track with your response!

The only thing I can think of to add is that you need to confirm what foods the child is has an allergy with. You can also probably go over the fortnightly menu with the parents and explain what types of meals that will be provided and see if there are any meals that need to be alternated to suit the child (in the case of the egg allergy).

Hope this helps,
