Professional Behaviour and Standards

Post by but3rfli3xo » Wed Dec 22, 2010 6:35 pm

How do You challenge unethical behaviour by your colleagues?
And how do you support your colleagues if you think something that you have witnessed is out-of-line?

Thankyou, all your thoughts and opinions are greatly appreciated :)

Hi,

You asked a good question. However I think there is no straight answer to this since there are so many factors to consider and it also depends on the scenarios.

Sometimes working in childcare, unfortunately we witness other staffs behavior which isn't acceptable. Depending on how severe it is there are a few options you have. You can report it to your director (or person in charge) or even go straight to the management itself. Another option is, talk directly with the staff member themselves (in a casual manner) about what you witnessed. Also keep in mind that sometimes some people do somethings without realizing that it is unethical. So everyone needs a second chance, when they do something wrong, especially if they don't know what they are doing wrong (unless it's completely out of line and unacceptable).

Anyways...I will answer your questions based on the way I will handle the situations:

How do You challenge unethical behaviour by your colleagues?

Since I am the room-leader, I would normally talk directly to my colleague itself when I see some unethical behavior and explain to s/he on what they did wrong. I will also find out if he/she was aware that their behavior was unethical and unacceptable. If I was in your position I would have a chat with the staff member about what they did. I know sometimes working in childcare and mostly working with ladies, it's not easy to talk to other staff about issues because it gets taken personally or way outta line but if you notice something you need to deal with it before it gets worse.

And how do you support your colleagues if you think something that you have witnessed is out-of-line?

If I have witnessed something out-of-line, of course I will first talk to the colleague about it first and also report it to the higher authority since it is my duty to do so. Since I would have already spoken to the colleague first and got their side of the story behind the reason why they acted this way, I can explain this and also what I have witnessed to the higher authorities. From there, it is up to them on how they handle it...

Hope this helps...

Cheers :geek:,
