How do I deal with Parents?

Post by Lorina » Sat Mar 27, 2010 7:25 pm

In dealing with parents make sure you have got open communication. Go and talk to each parent when they pick up their child in the afternoon.

If a parent wants to discuss an issue with you set up an appropriate time where you have an opportunity to discuss the issue without any interruptions.

If you dont know the answer to a question by a parent dont lie simply say that you would need to check and that you will get back to them as soon as possible (dont forget the question).

Have a variety of communication- emails, face to face, parent communication books, personal notes.

Here is a few steps to help resolve conflicts while dealing with parents:

-Everyone involved in the conflict should agree to work on the problem.

-The problem should be identified by all those involved in the conflict.

-Each person should clearly describe his/her feelings about the issue.

-Solutions to the problem should be offered by all.

-From all suggestions, a solution should be proposed and agreed upon.

-Schedule another opportunity to discuss the problem and evaluate the progress towards the solution.

Here is how to deal with parents in a meeting:

1) Let the parent know what the meeting is about, in advance.

2) Plan on covering a few main points. Avoid overloading the agenda with too many topics.

3) Limit the invitation list to those people who are vital to the communication and the issue.

4) Choose an appropriate space.

5) Consider comfort with good lighting and comfortable seating.

6) Take notes and distribute them after your meeting.
