Post by lanashakir » Tue Oct 20, 2015 10:38 pm

Can Please help me

Scenario:
Tommy’ arrived to child care with his Mother and had swelling and a bruising to the left eye. When the Educator asked Tommy’s mother what had happened she looked away and mumbled: ‘he fell and bumped his head’ Tommy’s mum then quickly left without saying goodbye to Tommy or the Educator.
Throughout the day Tommy seemed withdrawn and had several toileting accidents, which is extremely rare for him. He was extremely distressed when the Educator was changing him saying how ‘Daddy’s going to be very angry with
Q1: In reflection of the scenario, what type of questioning should an educator use?
My answer is: In the above scenario child is disclosing directly as you can see swelling and a bruising to the left eye and also as his mum told about what happened, secondly he is also indirectly disclosing by saying 'Daddy's going to be very angry with me so in this situation educator should use non-leading questions. As an educator I will ask Tommy If I can have look at his eye and apply medication if necessary, make him comfortable and relax. Talk to him privately, reassure him that it is okay to tell what happened if he wants to share with me. I would ask how you are feeling ? Is it paining ? How did you fell down

Q2:Give two examples of questions that could be asked?
Q3:What procedures should be followed according to current legislation in your state in regards to the scenario?
My answer is: Processes for risk assessment can differ state to state as is Mandatory Reporting. For educators if you are unsure about indicators speak with your supervisor, make sure you are aware of current requirements at all times and follow your local legislation.
By following an effective process educators and supervisors are able to be equipped to be objective in relation to their concerns and take action where required to protect children where necessary.
Below outlined is a general process:
OBJECTIVELY RECORD... all concerns about a child. Sign and Date the Reports.
IDENTIFY CHILD ABUSE INDICATORS... consider the types of abuse
ASSESS DEVELOPMENTAL LEVEL... look for any developmental delays
DISCUSS CONCERNS... talk with your immediate supervisor and other relevant
DRAW A CONCLUSION... with your supervisor —about risk or abuse to the child
CONSULT AND REPORT... to the child protection authority or department
CONTINUE TO SUPPORT... the child and monitor and record any further concerns
workers in the service in case they have additional information.

Your first point of contact is with the Duty officer from Department for Community Development, from the office closest to the home of the child. The duty officer will discuss your concern with you and ask you some specific questions and record it, then an initial assesment takes place.Wherever possible feedback will be given to you. When the assesment has found that action needs to be taken to promote or safeguard a child's wellbeing, action is taken. If you make a report you can expect to receive feedback about whether an investigation took place and the outcome of that investigation. If you are unhappy with the outcome you can ask for the name of a senior staff member with whom you can discuss your
Q4:Who should be involved in the process?
Q5:What is the policy called to be referred to in the scenario?
