Scenario: Sara - Keeping Body Fully Covered During Beach Day

Post by PaigeBradley » Wed Dec 23, 2015 10:08 am

Your service is celebrating beach day and has arranged some safe water activities. You have been instructed that all children are to wear bathing suits. Sara is 12 years old and is from a religious Muslim family. During discussion with her mother, you have been told that she is to keep her head and body properly covered at all times. While all the other children are having fun, you notice Sara seems sad and is not participating in any activities.
What can you do to help Sara feel better, while at the same time respecting her family’s clothing requirements?

Get educators to participate? Have an educator engage with Sara? Im really lost on this question.

- Talk to her find out what's wrong
- Get her peers to encourage her to participate in the water activities
- Tell her that she could still participate in activities, even though she is covered.
- Stay with her and give her confidence and encouragement until she particpates in activities

Hope this helps,
