Hi
Just wanting to know if this is on the right track? i have a 200 word count and it is a diploma question.
3. What are some possible contemporary impacts of other cultures on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, and the possible impacts of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures on other cultures?
The most prominent impact on the aboriginal people is from the years of oppression and violence resulting in the loss of land and culture due to European influences and the very misguided and wrong beliefs that they held.
One of the most published misguided beliefs was the practice of removing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families “existed from the earliest days of British settlement and reached its peak between 1910 and 1970. A national inquiry has since found that the practice was undertaken deliberately and systematically, with the aim of assimilating children into non- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families so that their unique cultures and identities would be lost” (Commonwealth of Australia, 2005)
This practice has resulted in a whole generation not knowing who they are or the traditional ways of life. Also for a large majority of these children, the places that they were taken to, they would experience abuse, poverty and discrimination. This has led to the aboriginal people of today not having any trust or respect for the health or community sector, schooling, the government or what they perceive as White Australia.
The Aboriginal teachings of looking after the land has started to come through with environmental corporations and volunteer groups embracing the views and beliefs that the Noongar People have for the respect they have for their land.
