HLTHIR404D - Historical/Current Factors & Service Impact To Indigenous Australians

Post by kirstiejm » Tue Nov 25, 2014 3:27 pm

Your Assignment Module Number and Heading: HLTHIR404D – Work effectively with Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people
Your Assignment Type: Standard Question
Currently Working in Childcare? Yes
Your knowledge: Beginner

Your Question?
7. Describe some of the historical and current factors that will influence and impact on how services are provided to Indigenous Australians? You should describe at least 3 historical factors and 3 current factors in your answer.

What is your answer so far or What have you done so far as an attempt to solve this question?
I don't really understand this question. I've gone through my study guide and there is a heading called Cultural Issues affecting Service Delivery. Under the heading, it says
"Specific cultural issues affecting service delivery for ATSI include:
- continuing disadvantage and economic inequities
- anglo-european influences
- family violence
Other issues that will affect the type of service you provide to Indigenous clients include:
- feelings of loss and grief as a result of disenfranchisement in their own country
- discrimination
- distrust of mainstream services
- death and dying rituals
- traditions, and varying degrees of adherence to these
- family structures and kinship
- education and the acceptance of the need of education"

Does this part of my study guide relate back to my question?

In 1883, Aboriginal people were removed from “white society” and placed on reserves and missions for protection. This meant that Aboriginal people had limited access to services needed to help them survive after the outbreaks of disease and attempted murders against them.
In 1901, the White Australia Policy was put in place. This meant Aboriginal people were excluded from the census, they did not have a right to vote and they were refused employment and the pension.
In 1909, Indigenous people were not allowed to be in the armed forces or provide assistance in defence type services. By 1951, the laws had changed, giving Aboriginals a chance to serve in the army, navy and air force.
In current events, the Stolen Generation and their families are now offered financial support through Centrelink services. Centrelink offers Indigenous people opportunities for work, living and disability pensions to allow them to live their day to day lives.
Indigenous people also have access to better health care services and medical centres specifically for the ATSI community. The Werin Aboriginal Corporation Medical Centre on Clifton Drive in Port Macquarie is a medical centre directed towards the health care of the Aboriginal community.
Public schools also have programs for ATSI students to help them with their study, financial problems and disabilities to help them achieve during their school years. They also offer counselling for students who may be struggling with learning disabilities, domestic violence issues or general support and encouragement.

Does this make sense in relation to the question?

You're getting there... Now using the information you have provided how is your centre going to give support to the ATSI community based on past and recent events? So one example could be the families of the "Stolen Generation" will be offered priority care and through Centrelink financial assistance of their child care costs through CCB (child care benefit). Another example ATSI children will be included in all experiences with all children involved in their room and centre. They will not be removed from a "white society" and the centre will reflect the diversity and culture of ATSI community.

Now I'm not 100% sure of my response but this is my understanding from it...

Hope this helps,
