Historical impact on families today

Post by Jamm11 » Mon Aug 22, 2016 12:02 pm

Here i have a report i need to do. Now im not good at reports. so im really not doing well with this question. the question is
1) You are to prepare a report which will outline the impact that European settlement has had on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and families. You need to clearly discuss the impact European settlement, and the government policies and practices since then, have had on Aboriginal and Torres Strait people and families. Use the following headings to ensure that your response covers the significant impacts:
a) Family Structure (ensure you discuss the short and long term effects of Stolen generation)
b) Health and well being
c) Self-determination
d) Loss of culture/ language/ land/ kinship
e) Education and employment

now maybe im not looking in the right places so if i could have a little help that would mean a lot. Because im so mind blank i cant think.

Hi,

I'm currently working on this exact question myself - have you had a look at the Creative Spirits website, I found a bit of info on there.
I'm not sure who you're doing your diploma through, but I think it's possible to just write a few paragraphs under each subject heading to make your report instead of formatting it like an essay. You might need to double-check with you teacher/marker on that one though :)

a) discuss how traditionally Indigenous groups arranged their family structures and look up aspects like kinship, mob etc and discuss that and then look at the stolen generation and talk about what that was, how many percentage were removed, how it affected them based on their traditional views of the kinship structure. You will also be able to find lots of information about long term impact of being a child of the stolen generation.
B) health and wellbeing- europeans intruduced lots of infections to a community who were isolated and not exposed so you will find reports of specific illnesses that wiped out large percentage of Indigenous Australians. Explore how their food sources were affected by the expanding populaion and traditional ways of farming (firestick) were transformed due to the cultivation of land. Also the europeans started to bring in food sources that werent naturally found here. Then look at modern day and how life expectancy is lower for Indigenous etc. You will also find masses of information about inadequate healthcare for Indigenous communities and also about infant mortality rates etc.
c) self determination - look at the ideas of where Indigenous australians have been given the right to self govern...Yakkala bark petition, australian human rights commission has a right to self determination policy, land right policies, self management policy enacted by malcom fraser, paul keatings redfern speech etc Look at how some of these policies have help and others have actually hindered the right to self determination (many of them have harmed it)
d) just look up these topics online you will find lots and lots of info
e) education and employment are well documented online ..look up workingwithatsi.info also look at how schools have been shut down, how they need to be more culturally sensitive, how the govt is moving towards these ideas etc

hope that helps..did a dissertation on Indigenous Australia and their right to self government and autonomy

Hi,

I'm currently working on the very same report at the moment. Have you looked at the Creative Spirits website - it was recommended to us, and I've found a bit of usual information on it so far....
