Read the continuation of the case study and answer the questions that follow.

During morning activity time, you notice that Maxwell, aged 5 years, is quieter than usual. He normally enjoys participating in activities and interacting with children and educators but today he is pale and withdrawn. You also notice that he is in the same clothes he wore last time you saw him and they seem to be unwashed. When you get closer to Maxwell, you see that his clothes are dirty and smell of cigarettes and alcohol.

It is well before morning tea time when Maxwell asks if he can have a snack. You ask him what he had for breakfast this morning, and he says, ‘Nothing’. When you have made him a snack, you sit down with him and ask him, ‘Maxwell, what did you do on the weekend?’ He lowers his eyes and says, ‘Nothing’. He eats the snack quickly and asks if he can have another helping.

You decide to ask Maxwell some more questions to draw him out and find out what has been happening.

Questions

a) List three non-threatening, open-ended questions that you could ask Maxwell.

b) Describe what kind of abuse Maxwell is showing an indication of and explain your answer.

for the first question i have answered
Open ended questions

*What happened max?

*How did it happen?

*When did it happen?

Non threatening questions:

*Did mum or dad hit you?

*Did mum or dad leave you by yourself again?

*i bet that made you cry.?

For your open ended questions they are good, however your "non threatening questions" are misleading and judgemental...

Two kinds of questions are recommended when you talk with children about child abuse or neglect. Each has a different purpose. When you are asking a child about something that could be awkward, uncomfortable, embarrassing, shameful, or sensitive, open-ended questions give you the best chance of getting the whole story. When you need specific facts, who, when, and where, closed-ended questions are useful.

Asking Questions Of Abuse

For b) re-read the scenario and use the evidence as examples of abuse that may be occurring...

Hope this helps!
