A National Police Clearance Certificate (technically called a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check) is basically a background check that shows whether you’ve got any disclosable criminal history. In childcare, almost every centre will ask for it—it goes hand‑in‑hand with the Working With Children Check, because both are part of compliance under the National Quality Framework.

The process is pretty straightforward: you apply online through an ACIC‑accredited provider or directly with the AFP. You’ll need to fill out a form, upload ID documents, and pay the fee. For employment purposes, the cost is usually around $52–$57, while volunteer checks are cheaper (about $21). Most online providers give results within minutes if your record is clear, but if your application gets flagged for manual review it can take a few days. AFP certificates can take a bit longer — usually up to 15 working days. Delivery is usually by email, unless you specifically request a hard copy.
