Scenario: Giving Baby Bottle After Feeds

Post by Eilleen » Tue Jun 30, 2015 10:50 pm

Question
If the parent told you their baby had been hungry after feeds lately and that they would like you to make up a bottle of 210 ml,
would you do this? Why or why not

Answer hope it is correct
I wouldn't give the child a bottle however I may try some boiled water or maybe even try the baby on some sort of solid food.
Talk to the parent regarding what the child has been having regarding food.

For me it would totally depend on how old the baby was? I assume by feed they mean solids? I personally cant see the issue in granting the parents wish in this case as having a bottle isn't something that could really lead to a legal/ ethical dilemmas as long as nutritional needs are being met.. Possibly discuss with them what he is eating, snd increasing the meal size slightly to see if he is just not getting enough and genuinely still hungry. I would monitor tho and make sure full on solids before a bottle was offered, so doesn't just rely on bottle for nutrition.. but yea would totally depend on age. Under 6mths, more milk. 6 mths or over increase solids and offer water before offering milk. ? Over 1 as for 6mths n offer suggest sippy cup instead...... i could be wrong tho :wtf: :?

Oops i tried to edit my post n now it won't let me. Doh. Milk is still a vital nutritional requirement until after 1. So it does depend on where they are in starting solids, age etc, you could increase or try new foods textures etc. But offering milk after solids shouldnt be a problem

How old is the child and what is their diet so far. I believe that we need to respect parents wishes as long as it doesn't conflict with policy. A little drink of milk with their meal doesn't hurt them even if they are over 12 months as long as it is not flavoured. Hard to answer though without extra information.

baby not having anything else. that is why I thought of boiled water, maybe get some idea from the parent if the baby has started solids. But I figured if given extra bottle baby would be sick

I would discuss with the parents about possibly starting bub on some solids. If baby is still hungry after milk at 5 months old its time to introduce solids. Though some people now believe that solids should wait till 6 months .....opinions change all the time....then maybe give baby 240ml of milk and see if that ties baby over till next feed.
