Scenario: Ahmet Gadai

Hi can someone please help with this case study?

Ahmet Gadai is 3 years old and is one of Sparkling Stars’ newest attendees along with his sisters A’shadieeyah, age 5, and Rawhiyah, age 7. He is the youngest child and only son of a Muslim family that have recently immigrated to Australia.
With English being the family’s second language, you have found this has led to communication issues and Ahmet eventually demonstrating some frustrating behaviour in response. You have also noticed that when the father is communicating with any of the women at the centre, he is very domineering and aggressive in his approach to any discussion regarding Ahmet’s behaviour. To you, the father seems to favour Ahmet over his two older sisters, as you have noticed he will scold the girls publicly in their mother language but does not act in the same manner towards Ahmet.
One day, one of your colleagues referred to Ahmet as a ‘little terrorist’. Initially, you thought it was just an inappropriate joke; but over a few weeks, you heard your colleague say it several more times and noticed that she tended to leave Ahmet out of class activities where Ahmet might cause trouble.

Describe three (3) considerations – internal and external – that might influence your own ethical judgement in Ahmet’s situation.

My answer - The 3 factors that i would consider which will influence my ethical judgement would be :-
1) In relation to children; I will - Act in the best interest of all children.
-Accepting that Ahmet does not speak much English and assist him with learning new words that might help him communicate with others without getting frustrated.
2) In relation to colleagues; I will -
Encourage my colleagues to adopt and act in accordance with this code and take action in the presence of unethical behaviours.
-The colleague is not accepting Ahmet for who he is and she tends to exclude him from the activities and making an unfair judgement based on his cultural background. This incident has to be reported to the Group Leader or the Director
3) In relation to families; I will -
Listen to and learn from families, in order to acknowledge and build upon their strengths and competencies, and support them in their role of nurturing children. -Ahmet's father should not favour his son more than his daughters. He should treat them all equally. He should also treat the women at the Centre with respect. I would refer to the Centre's policy on handling this matter.

[d] How this may influence my actions
By respecting the cultural background and the lack of language skill of Ahmet will help me accept Ahmet for who he is and help assist Ahmet in learning new words to improve his communication skill.
By having a professional attitude, it will allow me to act appropriately in the best interest of the child, colleague and the family to achieve a positive outcome.

[e] How would you take into account these personal values and attitudes you identified in the previous question to ensure non-judgmental practice?

The personal value and attitude identified above will allow me to offer comfort and solution to those involved to resolve the matter.
Respect - Ahmet is experiencing cultural abuse by my colleague. Respect plays and important part in accepting children regardless of their cultural background. This value will allow me to accept Ahmet for who he is and assist in helping him communicate with others in the Centre. Excluding him from the activities will be against the Code of Ethics because that means that I am not acting in the best interest of Ahmet.
Professional - By acting in a professional manner, I will take actions appropriately which will be in the best interest of the child, colleague and the family. Being professional will also help me put my own beliefs aside and listen and be empathetic towards the situation.

Can someone give me some feedback if I am on the right track?

In Ahmets culutre a son is favoured more than daughters. Even though we believe that they should be treated equally, it isn't so in Ahmets culture. Men are dominant figures while woman/girls take a step back. You can't change it, that's the way it is...

Also, for educators calling Ahmet a "terrorist" they should learn about the culutre rather than stereotying and criticising it....

for this question i understood that it was asking for our own believes and life experiences that might affect the way i react to the situation.

for example i thought to answer:
1.I understand the situation Ahmet is in as I also migrated to Australia with no English and went straight into primary school, where I suffered from discrimination.

2. Weather I have a friendly relationship with the other educator or not.

this would affect the way i react in the situation.

am i right?

boys are valued and respected more than girls...etc.
