For each of the children below:
a) Identify three (3) examples of safe, supportive and equitable practices we can implement to support learning?
b) What would be inappropriate practices for these students.
6-year old boy, small for his age, shy, introverted, kinaesthetic learner
Inappropriate practices:
1. Having things on high shelves as he is quite small and might not be able to reach them.
2. Insist that the child has to participate in large group experiences that he doesn’t want to participate in.
3. Announce introverted kid as shy, and don’t make them perform small talk
Safe, supportive and equitable practices:
1. Teachers use a variety of strategies to help children develop new concepts. This can include computer programs, music, and books on tape.
2. speak quietly give him time to think and participate in his own time.
3. Having him be able to play with a squishy ball during group time to help him concentrate
12-year old girl, from large Pacific Islander family, easily bored and restless, auditory learner, loves music and dance
Inappropriate practices:
1. Setting information to a tune and singing it to help remember it
2. Reciting important information aloud, perhaps recording it and playing it back
3. Limiting distracting noises
Safe, supportive and equitable practices:
Don't know what to write in Safe ,supportive and equitable practices
15-year old boy, slight physical disability, speech difficulty
Inappropriate practices:
1. Insist a child to participate as a host in Annual function but he doesn’t want to partcipate in it.
2. Insist a child to do his work(stairs up and down) by own,but he doesn’t want to do.
3. Provide an array of tasks from which to choose; if motivated by attention, provide opportunities for interaction
Safe, supportive and equitable practices:
1. Encourage child to participate in Annual function by giving him more suitable role.
2. Encourage child to use handrail and do his things by independently
3. Don’t force to participate in certain tasks or experience. For, example asking boy to read in front of group of kids
