Your Assignment Type: Case Scenario
Currently Working in Childcare? Yes
Your knowledge: Beginner
Your Question?
Marcus (five years old) is usually a very happy and busy child who participates in a range of activities and interacts with many different children in small groups. He has attended your service for over a year and you know him very well. Marcus’s mum is a single parent and has recently started to go out socialising, leaving Marcus with relatives and friends often.
Today when Marcus arrives at your service he is crying. He had stayed at his uncle’s house overnight while his mum went out. Marcus’s uncle smells of alcohol and he doesn’t talk to you or any of the educators.
Marcus settles once his uncle leaves, but he chooses to sit in the book corner alone and yells at other children to go away if they come near this space.
3. What open questions could you ask Marcus to help determine if they are being harmed
What is your answer so far or What have you done so far as an attempt to solve this question?
What did you do at your Uncle’s place last night?
What did you and your Uncle do together last night?
What type of games did you play with your Uncle last night?
What’s making you feel sad today?

Re: Identify and Respond to Children and Young people at risk
With your questions, you just need to re-word them so they can be "open ended questions". The questions you have asked can easily be answered with a yes or no and that's something in which you have to avoid. Some open ended question can include:
"You look as though things aren't going well."
"Tell me about what you did last night"
"I know sometimes it is hard to talk about things that have happened to you, but I am here to help you"
"How often do you visit your Uncle's house"
Hopefully this helps.
