Hello, i was just wondering if someone could look through this and tell me if it seems like i have answered it correctly...

There are 8 chairs at the table, so room for 8 children at a time; however, if more want to join in we will extend our tables as needed.

Reason you have chosen to present this experience (Rationale);

It is December, and all of the children are talking daily about Christmas.
The children are all very interested in Christmas at the moment, and are talking about their Christmas trees at home.
In last week’s programming, the children were very interested in threading the large beads onto the shoelaces that were available to do during free play, this was a popular activity, so I believe this will extend their learning using smaller beads for a different purpose. The children will benefit from this fine motor activity.

Identify developmental priorities / learning opportunities;
• What developmental domains/areas does your experience support?
My experience supports Physical Development.

• What will the children learn while participating in this experience?
The children will learn how to thread beads onto pipe cleaners. They will learn how to bend and shape the pipe cleaners into different designs. They will learn how to create different patterns with the beads.

• Identify the developmental priorities by stating both the Developmental areas AND the specific skill or behaviour you wish to enhance.
The developmental areas are ?
The specific skill will be “threading”.

• Include HOW you intend the child to achieve the developmental priority. For example “Joshua will develop whole body coordination skills and static and active balance (gross motor) whilst stepping across the stepping stones”.
The children will develop their fine motor skills such as grasping and manipulation while threading the beads.

• Include other developmental areas / skills that can be encouraged through this experience. E.g. Social development; Joshua will develop turn taking skills when waiting for his turn at the stepping stones.
Creative Development / Social and Emotional Development.
They will have the opportunity to socialise as they create, thus extending on their Social Development.
They will have the opportunity to form their own designs first by arranging the beads in patterns before they thread them, or by spontaneous imagination, threading as they please.

Describe how you will set up the learning environment;
This section should include;
• Where you will set up the experience
I will step up the experience in the middle of the classroom on tables. I will combine 2 large tables to make a large square shape in the centre of the room.

• How you will set up your experience – appearance and aesthetics
I will step up the experience by displaying a few pre- made examples for the children to see. I will have the different coloured beads in different bowls, laid throughout the tables for easy access for the children. I will also have the pipe cleaners laid throughout the table for the children to access also.

• Materials / resources needed
Beads, Pipe cleaners, Textas, Paper Name tags

• The timing of your experience (during free play time, after group time/morning tea etc.) and approximate anticipated length (available throughout free play time, 20 minutes etc.)
I plan to do this experience at free play time, as an option for craft time. Free play time goes from 11:15am to 12:00pm, and we start to pack up at 11:50am, so it will run for 35minutes.

• Supervision required
Supervision required will be myself and all of the staff in the room, which is 3 other staff members. But I will be the one that stays at the table and assists the children.

• Health and safety considerations
The health and safety considerations are choking if the children put the beads in their mouths, but as the youngest child is almost 5 years of age, they are pretty good with following safety instructions.

• How and/or why children will be drawn to participate in your experience (may make reference to aesthetics)
I will arrange a display of the pre-made ornaments. Using a book stand, I can hang them on it, and the children will see the decorations hanging. I will encourage the children to participate by talking to them as they move past the table. By speaking enthusitically with the children already at the table. I know there are a certain amount of children that will come over straight away to the craft tables.

How will you involve the children in your experience?
Describe in detail the procedures and strategies you will implement to support development and learning;
• How will you introduce the experience to the children?
I will you introduce the experience to the children by first discussing the fact that it is almost Christmas. I will talk about Christmas trees and decorating them. I will show the children some examples of the decorations that they will be making.

• How will you encourage participation?
I will you encourage participation by first showing them how to make a decoration. By showing them how to thread the beads. By asking their opinions and ideas for different colours and patterns etc.

• What will you say / do to support the children in achieving the identified developmental priorities?
I will guide the children with the threading verbally. I will say to them to concentrate on the hole, and poke the pipe cleaner through. I will let them know that it might be hard at first but it will get easier once they learn how. I will tell them that it is a very enjoyable craft to make, and they will be proud of themselves.

• How will you explain and reinforce limits / guidelines?
I will explain the guidelines by offering them direction and example of how to achieve the outcome. I will offer limits on what is and what is not acceptable behaviour regarding the craft items (e.g. - no putting beads in your mouth, no throwing the beads etc…) I will reinforce this verbally if I feel I need to. I will be constantly observing and monitoring all of the children at the craft table.

• What communication and interpersonal skills will you use? Provide examples
Communication skills I will use are facial cues, and intonations in my voice. I will provide a helpful and fun experience for the children. While we make our crafts, I will talk to the children about Christmas and how special it is.

• How will you conclude the experience?
I will conclude the experience by asking the children to hang the decorations they have made on our class Christmas tree.
During group time following free play, I would like to have a small discussion with the entire class, bring the attention to the Christmas tree and the new decorations it now has, offering the children who made them a chance to feel proud of their achievements.

Reflection / evaluation of the experience;
Describe ;
• How did the children respond?
The children responded very enthusiastically.
They were very excited to be making decorations for Christmas, and were very keen to take them home to hang them on their own Christmas tree.

• Did children achieve your learning outcomes? If yes, describe briefly what was achieved and how. Give examples, including quotes from children if appropriate. If no, describe briefly the level of achievement, giving examples and quotes where appropriate.
The learning outcomes achieved were- (haven't done this bet yet, but i will add them from the elyf)

• Did any spontaneous / unexpected learning occur? If so, what/how?
Unexpected learning was that some of the children showed very good maths skills with counting their beads and organising them into different colour groups to make patterns.

• Did you provide a suitable learning environment and appropriate materials? Would you change anything next time?
What I would change next time was I would add a larger variety of craft items to make them out of as some of the children requested that we make some shiny decorations with glitter.

• Did you say and do the right things / did your strategies work?
First we discussed the idea of decorating our Christmas tree in the class.
We spoke about what kinds of decorations we could make.
My strategies were to model to the children a certain level of excitement about the task. To get them into the Christmas spirit. To encourage them to talk amongst themselves about Christmas, and to relate to one another while they enjoyed themselves, so yes, I do believe my strategies worked as all of the above was achieved.

• Are there other aspects you should consider next time?
Next time would consider different options to create the decorations out of, perhaps using recycled materials or natural materials from the backyard. We do have pine trees up the back of our yard so using pine cones are an option.

• What did you learn from this experience?
What I learnt was that it doesn’t really matter what you make, or how you make it. You just need to provide the children with opportunities like this to socialise about their excitement of Christmas, because that is what was most important to them, not the outcome of the craft item.

The children were very involved in this activity, as I assumed they would be being so close to Christmas.
We put on some Christmas songs into the background, and many children and staff sang softly while making the decorations to give atmosphere.
The children created their own decorations, which we added their names to so that on the last few days of school they will be able to take theirs home and place them on their own Christmas trees.

Follow-up ideas;
• What experiences could you provide to extend on children’s learning for next time?
As a follow up, I would like to provide the children with objects to create crafts in patterns, as a number of the children were enjoying threading the beads on in pattern formation.
I could extend on this with a variety of different options by using either craft items for them to create, or by introducing the patterns in a variety of different forms and scenarios.
Cognitive groups such as Maths group, identifying shapes and patterns, but keeping it interesting.
As a craft item we could use coloured shapes of cellophane to create stained glass windows.

Hi Chocky,

Really detailed response! As I was reading it, it felt like I was actually there seeing this experience take place! I really like this idea and would love to steal it (LOL)! A great experience you shared that can be extended upon if needed. You answered all parts of the questions in detailed response and I don't think there is anything else more you can add to it! It sounds like the children really enjoyed this experience that you set up for them!
