Routine/Task:   Safe/Appropriate Practices  
Preparation of infant
formula and food according
to food safety standards:

Wash hands and food contact surfaces (e.g. benchtops) thoroughly with soap and warm water and dry thoroughly.
Wash and sterilise equipment such as bottles, teats and utensils.
Use gloves to remove bottles and so on, to avoid re-contaminating the equipment.

Storage of fresh formula/
breast milk:

Freshly expressed breast milk may be stored in the fridge proper (not the door) for up to 48 hours following collection provided temperature remains < 40C

at room temperature (26ºC or lower) for 6-8 hours. in the fridge (4ºC or lower) for up to 72 hours – the best spot is the back of the fridge where it's coldest. in the freezer compartment (-15ºC or lower) inside a fridge for two weeks


Thawing of frozen breast
milk:

Always thaw the oldest breast milk first. Remember first in, first out. Over time, the quality of breast milk can decrease.

There are several ways to thaw your breast milk:
In the refrigerator overnight.
Set in a container of warm or lukewarm water.
Under lukewarm running water.
Never thaw or heat breast milk in a microwave. Microwaving can destroy nutrients in breast milk and create hot spots, which can burn a baby’s mouth.
If you thaw breast milk in the refrigerator, use it within 24 hours. Start counting the 24 hours when the breast milk is completely thawed, not from the time when you took it out of the freezer.
Once breast milk is brought to room temperature or warmed, use it within 2 hours.
Never refreeze breast milk after it has thawed.

Heating of formula/breast
milk:

Re-warm by placing the container in heated, shallow water for no more than 15 minutes or use a commercial bottle warmer.
Microwaves are not recommended to rewarm formula as they heat unevenly and overheated parts of formula can burn the infant’s mouth.
Discard un-used infant formula after two hours at room temperature.

Cleaning of equipment(bottle, utensils, etc.)Remove detachable parts, such as blades, plastic or wooden handles, and screens.Wash dishes, pots, pans, and utensils and detached parts in hot, soapy water. Use a brush, if necessary.Rinse in clear water after washing.Place items in a wire basket or other container and immerse them in a sanitizing solution. Sanitizing solution can be prepared by mixing 1 tablespoon unscented chlorine bleach in 1 gallon of warm (not hot) water. Hot water causes the bleach to dissipate, weakening the solution.Air-dry dishes in a clean and sanitized dish rack. Using a dishtowel could recontaminate the dishes.Disposal of left overformula/breast milkUse a fresh bottle for every feed. Throw away any leftover formula or expressed breastmilk following the feed. Never give your baby leftovers.
