Pros and Cons Of An ECT And A Room Leader

Hi, has anyone worked as a ECT and a level 4 room leader at different times in your life, what are the pros and cons of each position?

I’ve done both at different points, and honestly each role has its ups and downs. As an ECT, you’ve got the professional recognition, more say in curriculum, and often better career progression, but the paperwork and compliance side can be pretty heavy. As a room leader, you’re right in the thick of the day‑to‑day with the kids and your team, which can feel more hands‑on and rewarding, but you’re also juggling rosters, staff issues, and sometimes stuck between educators and management. The big difference is that ECT carries more responsibility for educational outcomes, while room leader is more about managing the room and routines. Both can be fulfilling, it just depends whether you prefer the teaching/planning side or the practical leadership side.
