Master In Early Childhood or a Diploma in Childhood Education

Post by trish73 » Mon Mar 08, 2021 8:49 pm

Hi, I posted a question earlier about either studying a Master in early childhood education or a Diploma in childhood education. However, I came across graduate certificate or diploma in early childhood education that I can use my art degree to get into. Would both graduate certificate and diploma give me the qualification to work as a ECT or a level 4 room leader?
Has anyone else done a graduate diploma or certificate in early childhood education who had a non childhood degree? What was your experience like studying and are you working as an early childhood teacher or room leader?

I hear you the whole qualification pathway can get pretty confusing! Here’s the gist in plain speak:

A Graduate Certificate in Early Childhood Education usually isn’t enough on its own to be recognised as an ECT under ACECQA. It’s more like a stepping stone or an add‑on for people already in the field.

A Graduate Diploma is different if it’s ACECQA‑approved, it can qualify you to work as an ECT even if your first degree was in another area (like your art degree). That’s the one that opens doors to being a room leader or Level 4 educator.

Plenty of people with non‑ECE degrees go down the grad diploma route. The feedback I’ve heard is that it’s intense but manageable, especially if you’ve already got uni study under your belt. Most end up working as ECTs in centres once they finish, and some step straight into leadership roles because centres are crying out for qualified teachers.

So in short: grad cert not enough by itself, grad diploma yes, can get you ECT recognition. Just make sure the course you pick is on the ACECQA approved list.
