More than $2.4 million in new grants for the early childhood sector have been made available, in an effort by the Palaszczuk Government to further upskill workers in the industry.

Education Minister Grace Grace said eligible services could apply for grants of up to $30,000 to meet the national legislative requirements for an early childhood teacher.

“The national legislation requires early childhood education and care services to employ university-qualified early childhood teachers,” Ms Grace said.

“Educators who are working towards an approved early childhood teaching qualification will need to have completed their studies by the end of 2021 to be recognised as an early childhood teacher.

“We know the demand for teachers across all of our education sectors is growing.

“These grants will support Queensland’s early childhood sector as it works to increase the number of appropriately qualified teachers.”

Ms Grace said the Palaszczuk Government wanted all Queensland children to have access to quality early childhood education.

“These grants will make sure early childhood education and care services have the appropriate skills to ensure every child gets the best start in life.

“The grants will help services employ relief staff when educators are on student placement or study leave, contribute to travel and accommodation costs, and purchase equipment or resources to support educators while they are studying.

“I’m excited to offer this funding and to see the benefits it delivers for both the early childhood education and care sector and Queensland children.”

Ms Grace said grant applications are open now and close on Friday 28 February 2020.

“I encourage all eligible early childhood education and care services to apply,” she said.

“My department is running information sessions during February to provide an overview of the funding criteria and the application process.”
