Two-year-old Lachlan Mitchell was left unsupervised for seven minutes in his Perth FDC service where he was found face down in the water on November 9th, 2015.
Educator Karla Zablah, who left him alone to try and settle another crying baby when he drowned, was fined $6,500 for failing to ensure he was supervised, it has been reported.
This tragic incident has called to ban swimming pools, ponds and spas at FDC centres.
Currently, there are around 258 family daycare centres that do have pools in them and the call is for these services to be banned for caring for children under five due to the high-level risk of drowning.
This is an extremely tragic incident which has occurred. Families trust us with their children and it's our duty of care to protect and supervise each and every child with us so an incident like this doesn't occur. Please ensure you supervise children and make sure that you are able to see all children at all times. Being distracted for a few seconds and not watching what is happening can be tragic.
