Education Minister Jason Clare has announced the creation of a national educator register as part of a sweeping reform package aimed at strengthening child safety in early childhood education and care services.
The register will serve as a centralized database of childcare staff across Australia, tracking qualifications, employment history, and compliance records. It is designed to improve transparency, streamline oversight, and ensure that only properly credentialed professionals are working with young children.
The educator register is one component of a broader initiative that includes:
- Mandatory child safety training for all staff.
- A CCTV trial across 300 small and medium-sized childcare providers.
- A ban on personal mobile phones within childcare environments.
These measures are intended to bolster child protection standards and reduce risks of abuse or neglect in early learning settings.
While the reforms have been welcomed for their focus on safety, some experts have raised concerns about over-reliance on surveillance technology. Advocates stress that meaningful change requires not just monitoring tools but also robust training, clear accountability, and a culture of vigilance throughout the sector.
The national educator register is expected to be operational by February 2026, marking a significant shift in how childcare staff are tracked and regulated across jurisdictions.
