Suggest ways in which children can be supported with tasks as they begin to develop an understanding of their physical needs in the following situations. Think about what you can DO, SAY and PROVIDE in the environment.

Situation 0-2 yrs Suggested strategies to support a range of self-help skills

Assisting with packing away

Meal times

Toileting

Hygiene / hand washing



Suggest ways in which children can complete tasks themselves and to develop an understanding of their physical needs in the following situations.

Situation 3-5 yrs Strategies to support a range of self-help skills

Meal times

Caring for own belongings

Caring for equipment such as puzzles, books, games with loose parts

Clearing and wiping tables after a messy activity

Assisting with packing away - picking up toys off the floor, putting activities away in baskets

Meal times

Toileting - pulling up and down their own pants, wiping themselves after going to toilet, flushing toilet, washing hands

Hygiene / hand washing




Situation 3-5 yrs Strategies to support a range of self-help skills

Meal times - setting the table, feeding themselves, pouring their own drinks

Caring for own belongings - putting dummies & comforters in their bags, looking after toys brought from home, wearing an apron during messy activities, putting paintings drawings in their bags

Caring for equipment such as puzzles, books, games with loose parts - putting activities in the right spot, picking up pieces on the floor, putting lids on textas, putting books on the bookshelf

Clearing and wiping tables after a messy activity



Situation 6-12 yrs Strategies to support a range of self-help skills

Meal times

Helping to gather indoor/outdoor equipment such as art/craft, balls, sand toys etc… ready to be put away

Caring for own belongings - looking after toys brought from home, wearing an apron during messy activities, putting paintings drawings in their bags

Caring for environment - using water cans to water the garden, planting seeds, digging up weeds, watering flowers
