Assessment Task 2
IC092- Supporting others

CHCORG428A Reflect on and improve own professional practice
Effective leadership in early childhood services requires the ability to direct, guide and support others to perform to the best of their ability.
The student
Lias who is 17 is undertaking a VET course in children’s services. He is hoping to be taken on as a trainee when he leaves school so that he can complete his Diploma. He plans to complete a teaching degree once he has gained some industry experience.
Lias undertakes workplace experience for four hours per week at a local child care centre. The experience is the highlight of his week. He loves the work and enjoys the many challenges of working with the preschool children. Lias is not afraid of hard work and doesn’t mind doing the cleaning and preparation work. He is learning a lot just by observing the team work with the children.
Lias has noticed that the practitioners in the room use very different approaches to managing the children’s behaviour. Kate is very soft and gentle and uses encouragement, praise and explanation; Lorrie is stern and strict: Trish gets easily exasperated and raises her voice.
Today Lias was helping the children to pack away the blocks. The children are great block builders but don’t like to put them away. Lias copies Kate and tries to make a game of it – this usually works most of the time. However, today Liam and Michael are being very difficult and are refusing to help, instead they are throwing the little plastic cars, trying to get them into the container. Seeing this behaviour Trish intervenes, yelling at the boys and ordering everyone else, including Lias, to leave the block area. She then tells the boys they must stay there until they have put all the blocks away or they will miss out on morning tea. Both boys begin to cry.
Lias, upset and embarrassed, makes a beeline for Kate who is helping children to tidy the dramatic play area. Kate can see that Lias is upset and says: ‘Don’t worry, that was not your fault. Trish can be very harsh on the children sometimes’.
As Director of the service you happen to witness this incident. You have spoken to Trish on many occasions about raising her voice to the children. You are also extremely annoyed that Trish behaved this way in front of Lias. Trish is supposed to be guiding and mentoring Lias and role modelling best practice!
1. As Director you decide to take action to address the behaviour of Trish.
a. List the concerns you will need to raise in relation to this incident (and in light of previous discussions)

b. Describe how you can help Trish to take responsibility for her poor performance and address her inappropriate behaviour. (You will also need to tell Trish that you longer have confidence in her ability to mentor Lias.)

c. You feel it is important to also speak to Lias. What will you say in relation to ethical conduct?

d. You decide to hand over the supervision and mentoring of Lias to Kate – why is this a good decision?

What is your answer so far or What have you done so far as an attempt to solve this question?
Please help I'm struggling

You need to attempt a response to assignment questions in order to receive support. Search for "grievances at work" in Google which will help you understand how to deal with staff issues:

http://www.schoolsindustry.com.au/news. ... =60&id=103
http://w3.unisa.edu.au/policies/codes/m ... -staff.asp

Use the ideas from the information listed above to help answer your question. Also think about how you would handle a situation like this...
