B.Ed (Primary) instead of ECE

Post by fchaudari76 » Thu Sep 15, 2011 7:42 pm

Just wanted advice.
My aunt works for USQ (Ass Prof) & she is very knowledgable about education etc as she used to work for Catholic Schools of Australia and went around the country with that job, anyway while discussing uni plans she said to me that i should just do a B.Ed (primary) since i already have plenty of EC experience and i have my Diploma of CS & Montessori .... she said that the primary will just give me more options & i can still work in the EC setting with the Primary degree
I think this may be a smart move and initially i did consider this route before changing my mind and deciding to do the B.Ed (ECE)
What do you all think?

hi fefe- well my 10 cents worth- to my knowledge if you specifically want to seek employment in the Early Childhood sector it is better ( advisable) to do the ECT course as under the new legislation rolling out in 2014 this is THE qualification the sector will be seeking. The Bachelor-Primary is geared to exactly that- Primary age. Occasionally a ( govt.) primary school will hire an ECT for years Kindergarten-Year 2, but usually not as they need to allocate teaching hours across the school and its more feasible for a general teacher to cover junior years than vice versa. The Industry is presently recognising the Specialist area that Early Childhood Education is- and thus the onus on professionals with this degree being encouraged to enter the sector. like I said- that's just my slant on things! how is your job going?

Thanks for that advice.
Job ... well i havent been to work since last monday as had to travel down to brisbane to pick up the new car, got back late Thursday and by Fri morn i had a terrible cold so didnt go to work. Just been sneezing and blowing my nose constantly.
Still hate my job. Was meant to get paid yesterday but didnt so got ticked off and emailed the head office in Brisbane to ask them if not signing a contract, not telling employees what their pay is and not giving them any information on probationary periods, annual leave, sick leave etc was common practise in their company as well as not paying employees for 5 weeks
Got an email back from the Employee Relations Manager saying she would investigate so lets see.

Hey Fefe,

Hope your feeling better!

I think now that some universities are offering a combined Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood & Primary) which may still enable you to broaden work opportunities in both early childhood and primary schools. I'm not sure which universities are offering this course either. I think that if you want to continue with Bachelor of Education (early Childhood) you will still be able to teach in a primary school setting maybe up to Year 1 or 2...

I know it can be a difficult choice figuring out which degree to do!

Sorry to hear that work isn't all it's cracked up to be... :(

Cheers :geek:,

LA the issue is I need a degree that is offered distance learning only so i am limited by this
I know with a B.Ed (ECE) u can still teach upto Grade 3....personally i wouldnt want to teach kids older than this anyway but aunt put the niggle in my head...anyway i think i will just do the ECE option ... i dont like ppl confusing me even though it was meant for the best
think she thought i could get credit for 2 yrs of a science degree i did in the UK if i did primary but if i do primary i do not think i will get credit for my CS Diploma nor Montessori so its a catch 22

I am still sick and sneezing which is my pet peeve! lol ...am dosing myself up on lemsip and cold n flu meds!
:)
