Procedure to Administer Medication

Post by bhavya.b.s » Wed Feb 06, 2013 9:35 pm

Your Assignment Module Number and Heading: 2.Excursions/Medication/Allergy/Anaphylaxis
Your Assignment Type: Case Scenario
Currently Working in Childcare? No
Your knowledge: Beginner

Your Question?
Consider the scenario below and outline the medication procedures you would be required to follow as per the National Regulations:
Sam (7 years) arrived with his Mum on the morning of the excursion feeling very excited about spending the day at Dream world. Mum handed you a bottle of medication and asked that you make sure Sam is given the medication at the appropriate times throughout the day. What procedures must you follow?

What is your answer so far or What have you done so far as an attempt to solve this question?
The mother has to fill in a medication form and sign it authorizing she is given permission to you to administer the medication. On the medication form it needs to be signed by the parent to confirm all the details, such as: dosage, prescription, name on bottle etc. Only when the medication form is filled out and signed by a parent, then we can administer the medication to the child. Carer(me)should keep the medicine securely out of children’s reach and in a sealed, labelled container in the portable first aid kit is taken on excursions and will be used to store medications and medical equipment.

Yes this is the correct procedure to follow.

When you are ready to administer the medication you need another staff member to go through the medication form and verify the details with what the parents has written. Such as name of medication, dosage, instructions etc. They will also need to witness you giving the medication to the child and sign off on the medication form with you once you have given the child the medicine.

Hope this helps,
