Scenario 1 - Late
Millie's mother is always running late in the evening. Often Millie is the only child
left and there have been several occasions when staff have had to wait with
Millie after the 6 pm closing time. It's 6.15 pm and Millie's mother rushes
through the door. “Sorry I'm late.”
The carer decides to address the issue and responds by saying, “You seem to
find it hard to get here by closing time. Can you tell me why this is a problem?”
Millie's mother responds by saying: “It's none of your damn business!” Mother
and child make a rapid exit.
I. Does Millie's mother need to disclose additional information?
II. As the carer, explain what you would do?

Does Millie's mother need to disclose additional information?

Telling someone "it's none of their business" doesn't really answer questions. Since the centre closes at 6PM and she is constantly running late she may need to provide a bit more information of why she can't pick up her child at the correct time, just to give carers a better understanding of her situation.
As the carer, explain what you would do?

If someone said that to you, what would you do? Maybe during the heat of the moment, you'll let the parent be however, the following day it will probably be a good idea to approach the mother to discuss this issue. Maybe the way the carer approached the issue was insensitive, so you will need to apologize for the way you brought up the topic. Show your understanding and let the parent know that you can come to some sort of arrangement to make sure she can pick her child up on time.

Hope this helps,
