Child Has A Nut Intolerance

Dear all,

If a child in the centre has a nut intolerance not allergic do you ask some sort of documents from the parent like action plan or something ?

Nut intolerance means that the body produces an inflammatory response to one or more of the particular nut proteins compared to a nut allergy where the body experiences a serious reaction which often requires instant medical attention. With a nut intolerance, the reaction experienced would be delayed and less severe.

I don't think you will require an action plan since it is not an allergy however you would probably still need to probably have on file a letter from the child's doctor explaining his allergy, symptoms and required medical assistance (if needed). Maybe a photo of the child with his nut intolerance information - including symptoms, medical assistance required etc. in the kitchen or somewhere where you or another educator are aware of it (however it needs to be away from parents as for confidentiality).

The ASCIA Action Plan for Anaphylaxis (Personal version, red) is for individuals who have been prescribed adrenaline autoinjectors. These are medical documents and given to patients from their medical specialist.

The ASCIA Action Plan for Allergic Reactions (green) is for individuals with medically confirmed mild to moderate allergies, who need to avoid certain allergens, but have not been prescribed adrenaline autoinjectors.

The Action plans are used for allergies rather than food intolerances.

So basically they are saying that the action plan is primarily for food allergies rather than food intolerance. So, as I mentioned earlier I don't think it's necessary for an action plan however just a simple notice to explain what the intolerance is and how to avoid or what to do in case of food intolerance etc.

I was actually thinking of creating a template for food allergy/intolerance that can be used within a centre to help identify the child with a food allergy or intolerance...
