NSW Fire Stations Open Doors for Families on May 9

On Saturday, 9 May 2026, Fire and Rescue NSW will welcome families across the state to its annual Open Day. From 10am to 2pm, local fire stations will open their doors, offering a rare chance to meet firefighters, climb aboard fire trucks, and learn how simple steps like maintaining a working smoke alarm can save lives.

Event Highlights

  • Meet Firefighters: Talk directly with the men and women who protect your community.

  • Explore Fire Trucks: Climb aboard engines, see hoses, helmets, and rescue gear up close.

  • Safety Demonstrations: Learn how smoke alarms save lives and how to prepare a home fire escape plan.

  • Family-Friendly Fun: Interactive activities for kids, with some stations hosting special guests (e.g., Paw Patrol at the Museum of Fire in Penrith).

  • Museum of Fire Showcase: Penrith’s Museum of Fire will feature historical exhibits alongside modern firefighting demonstrations.

Participating Stations

Hundreds of fire stations across NSW will open their doors. Examples include:

  • Newcastle Region: Carrington, Merewether, Stockton, Wallsend.

  • Lake Macquarie: Belmont, Cardiff, Swansea, Toronto.

  • Hunter Valley: Muswellbrook, Scone, Kurri Kurri.

  • Port Stephens & Maitland: Raymond Terrace, East Maitland, Cessnock.

(Note: Stations may close temporarily if responding to emergencies. Families should check the FRNSW website for updates.)

Why It Matters

The Open Day is more than just fun, it’s about community safety. With winter approaching, FRNSW uses this event to remind families of the importance of working smoke alarms, safe heating practices, and having a clear escape plan. It’s also a chance to strengthen trust between communities and their local fire services.

The event is designed to be both educational and fun. Children can enjoy interactive activities, while parents gain practical fire safety knowledge ahead of winter. The Museum of Fire in Penrith will host a special showcase, blending modern firefighting demonstrations with historical exhibits.
