Join National Simultaneous Storytime On Wednesday 19th May

National Simultaneous Storytime, held on Wednesday 19th May. It is an annual event that aims to engage children of all ages to enjoy books by creating a sense of excitement around reading.

For the first time ever, it will also be read by over 1 MILLION kids across Australia and New Zealand and by astronaut Dr Shannon Walker from the International Space Station.

GIVE ME SOME SPACE! - Is the official story chosen for ALIA National Simultaneous Storytime 2021.

About The Book

Ever since she was a baby, Una has been fascinated with space.

Una plans to become an astronaut herself one day, and to go out into space and search for life amongst the stars. But she will have to wait to become an astronaut, and waiting is not something that she is nearly as excited about, so she takes matters into her own hands, designs and builds herself a spacesuit, and creates a rocket to carry her out into the furthest reaches of our solar system.

Una’s greatest discovery is not an alien spacecraft though, or an unexpected comet, but instead is the realisation that our planet is the most amazing .spacecraft ever, with air and water provided, and teeming with plant and animal life.

Experiences to Extend On This Learning

  • Research astronauts
  • Explore and the tour the International Space Station virtually.
  • Explore what astronauts eat in space.
  • Use materials and items to create a space rocket
  • Create space art and craft
  • Discuss the solar system
  • Learn the names of the planets and what they look like
  • Learn space songs and rhymes
  • Discuss ways children can prepare for a Space Mission, - How would the children prepare for a space mission? What would their rocket look like? How would they take off? Maybe they would like to sketch their ideas and build models. What would they need to wear? What equipment would they need in space? Can they take food?
  • Introduce scientific vocabulary in children's learning
