A childcare centre in Mandurah, Western Australia, has been left devastated after an alleged arson attack caused extensive damage estimated at $500,000.

The Incident

Police allege that at approximately 6:30pm, a 35-year-old man unlawfully entered the premises and deliberately set several items alight. The fire quickly spread, damaging both the patio area and the main building.

Charges Laid

The accused has been charged with:

  • Criminal damage by fire (arson)
  • Burglary
  • Assaulting a police officer
  • Obstructing officers (two counts)

During the arrest, a police officer sustained injuries and was taken to hospital. The officer has since been released.
